What is a Moroccan hammam? – Hammam in Marrakech
Hammam means “hot spring” in Arabic. In Morocco, the hammam is made up of several rooms heated to different temperatures. The heat is humid, which promotes muscle relaxation, the elimination of toxins and cleansing of the skin.
What is a traditional hammam like in Marrakech?
A traditional Moroccan hammam, also known as a “Moorish bath”, is a steam bath used for the purposes of relaxation, cleansing and well-being. Here is how a traditional hammam in Marrakech generally works:
PREPARATION: Before entering the hammam, one takes a shower to wash away dirt and body oils. We undress before wrapping ourselves in a towel or bathrobe.
ENTRY INTO THE HAMMAM: The hammam generally consists of several steam rooms of different temperatures. We often start in a warm room, then move to a warmer room before finishing in the hottest room. The heat and steam open the pores of the skin, making cleansing easier.
CLEANING: In the hammam, black soap, a soap made from olive oil and scrub, is often used to deeply cleanse the skin. Black soap is applied to the body, then left to sit for a few minutes before rubbing vigorously to remove impurities and dead skin cells. Sometimes an exfoliating glove called a “kessa” is used for more intense cleansing.
RINSING: After cleaning, rinse with hot water to remove soap and impurities.
RELAXATION: After rinsing, you can relax in the coolest room of the hammam, often equipped with benches or mattresses for sitting or lying down. You can stay there as long as you want to rest and enjoy the benefits of the heat on the body.
HYDRATION: Once out of the hammam, we recommend that you moisturize your skin with argan oil or a moisturizer to prevent it from drying out after exfoliation and exposure to heat.
The traditional Moroccan hammam is not only beneficial for the skin, but it is also considered an important social and cultural experience, where Moroccans come together to relax, chat and take care of themselves.

If you are looking for a typical and authentic experience, we recommend this traditional hammam in the Mouassine district of Marrakech.
