A natural site located at an altitude of 1,650 m, Ifran Morocco has been populated since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the numerous Neolithic remains found in the region’s caves. Moroccans claim that it was the oldest Jewish colony in Morocco, before the large nomadic tribes settled there definitively in the 15th century.

Today’s Ifran is a summer resort created from scratch by the French in 1928. There reigns a false air of European suburbs, half chic, half student, thanks to the establishment of one of the largest universities in Morocco. Its beautiful residential neighborhoods, made up of opulent Swiss chalet-style residences, attract the bourgeoisie from Casablanca or Fez in season, who come to go green. In winter, it is one of the winter sports resorts the most popular in the kingdom. The region is surrounded by beautiful wooded hills.

Ifran National Park

The Ifran National Park, with its 53,000 hectares, is majestic and shelters the largest cedar forest in the world, a true marvel to discover! This park, created in 2004 to protect this very special ecosystem, is a magnificent playground for hiking enthusiasts.

To immerse yourself in the immensity of this cedar forest, head towards Azrou, a few kilometers from Ifran. In the middle of this “kingdom of cedars”, the star of the forest is the Gouraud cedar! Its age is estimated at 800 years and it is supposed to be the largest in Morocco. Even if it is possible that there are larger ones yet to be discovered in the Middle Atlas, we must admit that this one is gigantic!

Encountering Barbary Macaques in Ifrane

Another interest of this forest is that you can observe Barbary macaques there. They are often numerous at the foot of the Gouraud cedar and are not very shy, because they are fed by tourists (which we do not recommend, of course!). But it is also possible to come across wilder ones in the forest. With their beautiful fur, these monkeys do not fear the cold in snowy weather, and are fascinating to watch. But with caution all the same, these animals remain quite unpredictable.

Its natural wealth led regional officials to create a 53,000 ha national park. It is in this area that we find the largest cedar woodland in the nation.

Ifran is the most popular Moroccan summer resort. It is additionally a pastoral area and has an experimental station for the study of animal actions.

Ifran Morocco is the ideal place for the departure of many excursions. From the station, you can embark on the Dayets circuit, see the Cascades de la Vierge by following the direction ‘source Vittel’ or go to Azrou, a town in the Middle Atlas located 17 km from Ifran Morocco, famous for its craft center specializing in its cedar wood work. You will find in Ifran, in your hotel, your riad or your rental villa or at the tourist office all the information with detailed maps of the mountains and lakes for your tours.
